Discovering the Secrets of Erotic Art: A Visit to the Museum of Erotica and Mythology in Brussels

Nestled in the Sablon district of Brussels is a unique place where art, history and sensuality intertwine: the Museum of Erotica and Mythology (MEM). Housed in an 18th century house, this museum is not just an exhibition space; it is a time capsule that transports visitors through human passion and desire throughout history.

The MEM, inaugurated in March 2012, is the fruit of Dr. Guy Martens ‘ life dedicated to the study and collecting of erotic art.

Its collection, meticulously built over nearly 60 years, houses more than 800 pieces. These include paintings, sculptures, Greco-Roman antiquities, Japanese prints and a wide range of curious objects, such as ivory netsukés, bronze secret boxes, tortoise shells, chiseled walking sticks, mammoth tusks, Persian miniatures and works by James Ensor. Each object tells its own story of desire and beauty.

A visit to MEM is a journey through the history of sexuality and eroticism. The collection shows how different cultures have interpreted and expressed sexuality, demonstrating that desire is a universal constant. The works reflect moments of “fertilization of creativity”, demonstrating the deep connection between eroticism and artistic expression.
