From that moment on, the abbey flourished and established itself as a prominent Cistercian monastery.

Decadence and Ruin

The end of the 18th century brought misfortune for the abbey. French revolutionaries set fire to the monastery shortly after it had been rebuilt on a larger scale. One of the most regrettable losses was its library, which housed 40,000 books and 5,000 manuscripts, all destroyed in the fire.

Despite its dilapidated state, Aulne Abbey remains a popular tourist destination in Belgium. Visitors can discover the history of the abbey and the life of the Cistercian monks through educational panels installed along an open-air route.
